Buying gold without proof of source of funds

Anywhere where it is a bit shady, this will work. There once was a guy in Berlin selling 20 Mio USD worth of gold. Mines in South America would definitely work too.

Best would be if one can buy it in the same jurisdiction as one want to store it. What about the more attractive jurisdictions as Switzerland and Singapore?

Germany you can buy for up to 2000 EUR in Cash and most often unlimited by card, they don't ask for SoF usually but depending on where you buy it. Switzerland there are dealers where you can pay with crypto and don't need to provide anything neither, they leave the gold bars in the volt after you paid so you can pick it up.

I have seen golden bars before ;)
it was discussed before I think... I just wonder how can you be sure that such a bar is not stuffed with tungsten, how do you find the counter party and what precautions would you suggest when meeting someone with enough cash to buy this suit case

btw, I'm not implying that buying physical gold makes any sense

You need to trust who you are dealing with. So you can exclude the US government: https://strogosekretno.com/index.php?p=newsroom&nid=7405
And no on the spot deals, everything must be pre-arranged.

You can ask for assaying, it's cheap (10$/€ per piece by experience). Tungsten is easily detected with ultrasound/xray testing. The main pain with gold is that it's still kind of big and heavy if you want to keep large amounts, and you can't travel easily with it. Airport xrays will signal anything bigger than a coin, as it is very high density.

For the anecdote, I had a 1kg ingot of silver in my luggage when I moved out of my previous home country. The customs officer at the airport asked me to open my bag, saw the ingot, then had a pretty funny 404 reaction, slightly embarrassed about what to do.

As a side note, never transit through Frankfurt, and especially with any kind of valuable. They are really horrible, do many random searches, for no reason, and bring the military police as soon as they see something that *could* be suspicious. A few friends had a bad experience, and so did I. I can tell you that being asked while very pregnant to remove your shoes, your wedding ring (yes), and have the local fully armed SWAT squad control your baby bottles in front of everyone is a very bad experience indeed.
