Not manadatory, but I was under the impression that it was pretty much required, has things changed?

If bank was in different country they want to know why and request more details / documents / proof about the UBO

You may use a Seychelles corp or Belize corp to avoid taxes! You may want to look into a non resident Cyprus company to avoid VAT many options are actually available at your hand already!
