Campione d’Italia any info?

For my next trip: Where is that beach?
I could not find a nice free public beach there.
There was one behind the first church (coming from CH on the left) and another belonging to a restaurant where you had to pay to get in.
it's all you get... better than nothing I guess...

some may find it ok.
i wouldn't spend a minute in that "beach", but it's just me.
snowy mountains > hills , sea > lakes,
so I would never live nor plant a flag there...

Mr Taradash , as a campione veteran, any truth to the W.G. Hill book the campione report ….. a classic read but I’m sure a lot has changed .

My Campione report, which is now over 30 years old, is out of date (as to the big advantages) mainly because of 2 events:

1) Bankruptcy & closure of the Casino. The Casino supported big pensions for every resident & a myriad of free services for the town. When the casino closed, the local economy was shattered. The only Michelin-starred restaurant was shut down.
2) Italy took full control making Campi just another EU member Italian town --with (almost) no special deals with Switzerland. In that sense, it is now like the German enclave of Bussingen in the North of Switzerland. I truly wish that news was fake news because I had to pay nearly Euro1000 to re=register my Campi Swiss licensed car in Italy, another big fee to transfer my Swiss driving license to Italy, and still another big fee to get Swiss medical insurance which used to be free for Campionese. There was no choice. Swiss authorities canceled the old privs and notified locals by registered mail they would be fined and maybe jailed if they didn't comply. I don't know who told you this was fake news. But sorry, it was real. The only way for a Campionese to keep the Swiss stuff was to change his/her official address by renting (or buying) a place in Switzerland ... Doing that is a paperwork bad dream.
PS: The Lido Beach is not a public Beach anymore. Same deal as in all of Italy: Italian Beaches are 99% privatized. Concessionaires are sold the rights to rent sunbenches, and parasols, sell food, etc. It's a mixed benefit because they keep the Italian beaches clean. The Lido is now well-equipped with rafts a boardwalk and other amenities. You can be served conveniences like decent Pizza and Margaritas... Residents get a season pass for very cheap.
PS: Tourist have to pay a few Euros. But here's a secret: It's Free after 5 PM.
You can't miss the Campione Lido because the only road through Campi passes right by it. There is a huge sign saying "Lido." That means "Beach" in Italian.
Did I mention there is (only) one 1st class 4 star very modern & classy hotel "The Grand Hotel Campione" owned by a Middle Eastern, gentleman. It is near the Lido. Their restaurant is expensive but good. Their parking lot is now full of Ferraris, Rolls, Porches, Lambos & such ---licensed in Latvia, Romania, Ukraine, Poland, etc. They seem to be full all the time (at least in summer!)
There are still a (very) few tax advantages for residents -- outlined in earlier postings.
Important: The Casino has re-opened but for now, it is running only at about 10% of its old capacity. Still, they are now contributing to the City treasury . At least the weeds are being trimmed & street lights are on again! Bottom Line: Campione is a nice, quiet, safe place to get Italian residence at a nominal charge and to then live within Switzerland!

Let me know what you think of the place. But rent for a month. I think there are several moderately priced Air b&bs advertised. One day in a place never gives an accurate feel for it. Some of my retired friends say it is their dream place. Entirely within Italian Switzerland, 100% safe, Nobody bothers you. Only 2 friendly cops in and regularly patrolling the town & one police administrative guy. No tax collectors. If any Offshore Corp people come to visit, let me know & I will be glad to meet you personally (if I am there). Right now I am at my other place in the French Riviera, making YouTube Videos.: youtube.com/@Lucky2balive888/featured. Some were about Campinone.
Campi is a quiet place, good air, some good restaurants and outdoor cafes, It has a good location in the middle of Europe, a few minutes from the big town of Lugano, an hour from Milan -with a great Chinatown.

When I first arrived in the town, my immediate thought was: "Where are all the people?" The parking lots were full of cars, yet not a single person was in sight.

Driving past the large casino, which still appeared to be open despite some claims here that it was closed, I continued through the small town to the lakefront, where there were around 7 or 8 restaurants. I sat by the lake and soaked in the atmosphere.

The town felt like a charming time capsule, with a slow pace and a sense of stepping back into the 1980s or 1990s. Despite its quiet nature, I found it a delightful experience and could easily see myself enjoying retirement here. It comes highly recommended for anyone seeking a peaceful retreat.

Mr Taradash and Brian k thank you for keeping this thread alive . I will be visiting in a couple of months with my wife as well . Still a million questions about this place. I’m curious how the healthcare situation works? Do you use Swiss hospitals / insurance ? It’s my understanding all the local bank branches have closed. Are you able to open a swiss bank account if resident in Campione or are you relegated to Italian banks. Also any truth to some really top level golf courses in the area? My wife and I are both EU citizens of that has any relevance to this thread.

If you are visiting & thinking of renting or buying in Campione , there is a friendly, competent & honest real estate lady you might go to see,
Wehner Ursula,
[email protected]
Her German ancestors moved there 100 years ago and she took over the 4 generation family real estate biz. Nobody (not even me) is more well informed about Campione. She can also help anyone who buys or rents from her get residence.
AS of today, both banks in Campi are still open and running.
Swiss banks in Lugano are no longer interested in Campione customers, but if you are holding id from somewhere else, you can open an account ... Be aware, most Swiss Banks want High Net Worth customers, not any two-dollar Joes. If you deposit Eu 500,000 in assets, you are welcome. Forget about a small account. But you CAN open a small account at eithr of the Campi banks- Sondrio or BP (?)
Campione residents can get Italian Med Insurance cheap & for more, Swiss Medical Insurance at a huge discount, maybe 1/8th of what it costs in the US for instance.
The local Casino seems busy on weekends, not so much other times. Owners of Cars parked in their big open lot are insde the Casino of course, Or having drinks or snacks at the half dozen outdoor cafes on the main drag.
The town is very small.
The sushi place offers the best dining out deal in town .All you can eat (good quality stuff) at about EU 17 for lunch. Right on the water -Lake Lugano.
