I'm wondering why all banks which open accounts remotely/online, require a passport copy.
Instead, they could accept a national ID card, not?

Do you think, a national ID card would be accepted too, or why is a passport required?

I don't see any difference, as usually you need the passport for traveling and gettings stamps into it.
What is the sense of it to use it for such actions, a national ID should be accepted too.

It's because passports are generally must trusted than ID cards. It's an international standard to accept passports, which makes it easier for banks to look you up in databases such as Worldcheck/Refinitiv.

National ID cards are usually only good for banks in the same nation, whereas international passports work internationally.

There are a few exceptions to this. National ID cards from one EU/EEA member state will often be accepted by banks in other EU/EEA member states, for example.
