VPN ghosting: seem to be in once place, but really be somewhere else.

In countries where it is not illegal to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network), you might still face legal problems if you use a VPN to access some information the government doesn't want you to access, or to spread information the government doesn't want spread. Maybe tax information or banking information, or something.

There's a new idea in the VPN world that could be very useful for some people: a VPN server that pretends to be located somewhere else.
Instead of using servers physically inside certain countries, "Smart Routing" uses servers that are, in reality, located elsewhere.
Seem to be in once place, but really be somewhere else.

I've been testing one of the VPNs that offers Smart Routing: Proton VPN.
But Proton VPN is not the only one:
Mullvad VPN out of Sweden offers something similar.

Here's a list of Proton's "ghost" locations, together with the real locations of the servers:

It's how commercial VPN services are actually offered. The equipment is seldom owned and colocated but leased in DCs where peering with members of AMS-IX, DE-CIX and LINX as well as Equinix-IX is possible. There comes a BGP routing and peering.

For instance, we had a route from Greece in LINX ns2

Proton AG is not different; majority of services are offered from Marseilles, Singapore and Miami where resources concentration is optimal.

That set-up is not secure as network analysis will discover number of hops anomaly. At best, an obscure layer.
