Jan. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Northern California was rocked by a magnitude 6.5 earthquake about 27 miles (43 kilometers) offshore from Eureka. The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 10 miles at 4:27 p.m. local time, the USGS said. A second temblor of 4.5 magnitude struck at 6:21 p.m. in the same general area, the USGS reported.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said that no general tsunami was expected, although in coastal areas of intense shaking, locally generated tsunami may be possible, triggered by underwater landslides.

The earthquake was felt as far away as San Francisco, the Los Angeles Times reported. It said that goods fell from store shelves and broke in Eureka.
