At the airport yes, they’ll often let you walk past first, creating the illusion that you had no intention of declaring your items. If the parasite is having a bad day, they might decide to assess the value of your belongings, hoping one of them exceeds 430eu. If they find a match, that’s when the real fun begins.

Obviously, keeping a low profile is the easiest way to avoid getting affected. Showing off luxury items and fancy cars will draw attention. Keeping a low profile, investing money away and enjoying fine holidays without bragging is the way to go.
I wonder where the boundary lies in not showing how wealthy one is. Normally, when someone has a lot of money, they buy a bigger house and a car beyond the average. Is this what you mean by not showing it?

Don't be a twat and flash it all over Instagram and Facebook. People can't help themselves...and I know that certain tax officials do trawl through social media looking for people who are living beyond their reported means.

A decade ago that would have been half.
The tax authorities in most countries have become very aggressive and reject ANY counter evidence a taxpayer might present.

I'm sure this is centrally controlled and driven by the need to secure funds for various reasons.

One of them is military buildup.

What do you mean by EU collapse?
I’d say @wellington means “financially implode”. After yesterday the first signs are out there. Hungary isn’t following the EU in its support for Ukraine.

An agreement has been reached to rearm Europe. 800 billion is a number that is floating around. Brace yourself as taxpayers.

This, supporting Ukraine, immigrants and a terrible economy is a build up to chaos waiting around the corner.

I unfortunately have to agree with you that the burden will fall on individual citizens within the EU. But what about the rest of Europe? Will all European countries be hit by a wave of tax and VAT increases, or is it primarily the EU that has to step up to become a superpower in the wake of the massive failure from the USA?

If it’s not the EU confiscating your assets, then it’s the tax authorities in your own country. Or we’ll be hit with so many taxes and fees that we end up paying 90% in taxes and can’t afford to accumulate any wealth.
