Cambodian BANK ACCOUNTS - real deal?

I have encountered two conflicting opinions regarding private bank accounts in Cambodia.

On one hand, there is information suggesting that such an account is excellent - it's not included in CRS, allows for large transfers from abroad, and operates flawlessly.

On the other hand, there are views that, while one can indeed deposit money and spend it locally in Cambodia, executing a larger transfer via online banking is very difficult.

This concerns a scenario where the account is opened during a short-term visit, without any ties to Cambodia, without speaking the language, and not conducting any business there.

Which is closer to the truth?

If you're from the west, banking in this part of the world is quite different from what you might be used to. If you have a good relationship with your account manager, things will run very smoothly and there will be very few questions asked.

If on other hand your account manager doesn't get a good impression of you or — worse — you don't have an account manager, it's probably going to be quite difficult.

Furthermore, not all clients and not all transactions are the same. One person's 500,000 USD wire can be lower risk than another persons 1,000 USD wire. What these banks worry about is if you'll cause them trouble. As long as you don't and they get to make some decent change on you in fees and FX margin, things tend to be smooth.

Cambodian banks are pretty much as far as i am aware when it comes to international owned or operated by the major Thai banks.

Likewise i'd imagine there's some Chinese footprint there also.

So yeah funds could be moved rapidly - however it became a haven for pig scams and the Thai side has introduced a lot of walls for banking (cash and digital), i'd imagine in Cambodia similar has happened.
