I'm looking to relocate soon to Bulgaria. (I currently reside in Romania if it's relevant.) The thing is, I'm not so keen on living there, at all. I just spoke to an accountant who told me they don't have a stay requirement. They're just happy to get my taxes, but problems can arise with my country of origin. This I knew already from reading this forum.

How do you find someone who's willing to sign a rental contract when you don't actually live there?

What do you do if you get an important mail from the taxman etc? I have no idea how far Bulgaria is in digitalization these days. In Romania you have Ghiseul where all fines and tax debts end up.

Romania, afaik, has 10% flat tax on personal income and 8% on dividends. It seems you are already in a potentially good place to be.

Most countries in Europe do not have a minimum stay requirement. Once you register, you pay taxes. But as with those tax certificates, any other country can claim you to be more tax resident there. You were warned.

Best is to use somebody you can trust. Maybe a guy here that lets you register in his place. He can then scan your mail or forward it.

Alternatively, register in an abandoned house and forward mail directly to you in Romania with the local post if they offer that or forward it to a mark scanning service.

Maybe I can help you? What exactly do you need in Bulgaria? Address? Does Ruse or Varna fit for you in BG? Rental contract would go and post -forwarding too.

It's a money thing;)

I’ve just registered my residence in Ruse (as an EU citizen) with the help of a local agent. The immigration service issued a residence card (with a local address on it) and I have also opened a bank account where the address is the Bulgarian one.
With a company, l’ll pay 10% tax on profit and 5% dovodend tax.
The social taxes are capped, everything above 2,000€ is tax free.
If you registered yourself as a freelancer, there is a 25% fixed deduction (therefore you’ll pay 10% taxes for 75% of the income) and also the social taxes cap is applicabile.

How hard is to get a freelancer residence for a non-eu citizen? What exactly entails this "freelancer" status? Can I just open a personal bank account and receive income from abroad (without opening a BG company) ?

You need to get a visa. Then you can just declare yourself self-employed (also known as individual entrepreneur, sole proprietorship). It is simple if you know the language, not much more difficult otherwise.
